Why Your Support Matters
Hatteras Community Sailing is a member-based nonprofit open to all. We were founded to encourage sailing and competitive opportunities for island youth — and to keep the maritime heritage of Cape Hatteras alive and strong in the community.
Hatteras Island is a working-class community that largely supports the vacation rental industry. The pressure of tourism can erode local character over time — and the best defense is a generation of young people with deep roots in the sea: kids who sail, fish, dive, build boats, and love this place.
No child is turned away for inability to pay. Scholarships and free program spots are available. Your support funds those slots directly.

Hatteras Islanders of generations past were as resilient to their challenging environment as the windblown cedar and live oak canopies along our shores. Changing times and modern society have connected Hatteras with the mainland so seamlessly that this unique resiliency and character can seem like a bygone era. But Hatteras has always been defined by the sea — and always will be, long after we are gone.
Help us keep active pathways thriving for nurturing a lifelong passion for the sea in this unique and special community. Sailing is an excellent on-ramp for youth to discover one of nature's most exciting playgrounds. For our participants, this reaches from the western shores of the Pamlico to the Gulf Stream at Diamond Shoals — and from Southport to Cape Henry — where sailing is as inherent as surfing, kiting, fishing, wreck diving, commercial fishing, and exploring the National Seashore.
We are at the foot of Hatteras Lighthouse and are committed to ensuring access to our waters is encouraged and inviting. Our current fleet can offer all of this — but needs your support to remain available to this special community and its visitors. Sponsors are acknowledged with a banner on our website, logo on event t-shirts, and recognition across our social channels.
