Adult Learn to Sail

Hatteras Community Sailing's Adult Learn to Sail program is designed for complete beginners and returning sailors alike. Over four weeks, you will develop real sailing competency on the waters of Pamlico Sound — one of the finest sailing venues on the East Coast.
Program Format Two morning sessions per week for four weeks — eight sessions total. Each class runs approximately 3 hours, scheduled in the morning to take advantage of the Sound's best sailing winds.
Three Summer Sessions Available Sessions run in June, July, and August. Space is limited to 6 adults per session to ensure personalized instruction and maximum time at the helm.
What You Will Learn We cover everything from first principles: how a sailboat works, points of sail, tacking and gybing, sail trim, basic navigation, and safe boat handling. By the end of the program, you will be able to skipper a small sailboat independently.
Our Instructors HCS instructors are US Sailing certified coaches with deep roots in the Hatteras sailing community. Small class sizes mean you get real feedback every session, not just observation from the dock.
This program supports Hatteras Community Sailing's 501(c)3 mission. Member discounts available — ask us about HCS membership.
